Warning issued for Canterbury rivers

3:10 pm on 4 January 2010

Canterbury's regional council has issued a warning to users of the area's rivers following high rainfall in the Southern Alps.

More than 200 millimetres of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours, which will cause rivers in the region to rise on Monday.

The council says the Waiau, Hurunui, Waimakiriri, Rakaia and Rangitata rivers will be much higher than usual and people fishing, boating and swimming need to take extra care.
