High winds are moving up the South Island, prompting a warning from police to motorists.
The winds have snapped tree branches and fanned scrub fires in parts of Canterbury on Monday afternoon. In Akaroa, a P-class two-seater yacht was lifted out of the water and swept ashore by the wind.
Police say motorists heading home through Canterbury after the holidays need to drive to the conditions.
