The police in Napier are hunting a man who held up a taxi driver at gunpoint in the city.

Detective Constable Dave Crosby says the driver had been called to the corner of Wycliffe St and Oldham Ave in the suburb of Onekawa at about 9.45 on Tuesday night.

He says that after the driver drove the customer to Harold Holt Ave he was threatened with a gun and told to hand over money. A struggle ensued and the man fled down an alley towards Oldham Ave.

Mr Crosby says the firearm was a heavy pistol or sawn-off shotgun about 30 centimetres long.

The man is described as Maori, about 20 years old, wearing a light-coloured hooded sweatshirt and dark-coloured trousers.
