Kaikoura council wants no more 1080

Kaikoura District Council wants to be officially free of 1080.

Mayor Kevin Heays says he is personally against aerial drops of the possum poison.

He believes it kills native birds, possibly gets into the waterways and says continued use will affect the district's "green tourist" status.

Mr Heays says a working party is being formed to advise the council on the direction it should take and the first report is due in March.

The Department of Conservation says the continued use of 1080 was approved by the Environmental Risk Management Authority two years ago.
