Northland beach much safer now

9:02 pm on 8 January 2010

The police say regular patrols are improving the behaviour of drivers using a Northland beach where a girl was killed when hit by a motorbike two years ago.

Daisy Ferandez, 13, was hit by a motorcycle being ridden by an unlicensed teenage boy at Baylys Beach.

Senior Constable Ian Anderson, who started regular beach patrols last summer, along with local volunteers, says drivers now seem a lot more safety-conscious - and they need to be.

Mr Anderson says patrols will continue on the beach, west of Dargaville, throughout January.
