A woman has drowned in the Hutt River near Wellington.
The 19-year-old was swimming in the Moonshine Park area of the river between Silverstream and Trentham when she got into difficulty in deep water about 2pm on Monday.
Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy says the local woman could not swim well and was seen waving for help.
She was pulled from the water, but attempts by family members, onlookers and emergency services to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.
Police will release the woman's name once her family and friends have all been notified.
