Kayakers 'risk being run down'

3:05 pm on 20 January 2010

The Napier harbourmaster is warning of a potential tragic accident as increasing numbers of kayakers stray into the port's shipping channels.

Captain Charlie Rycroft says people heading out in kayaks to go fishing are causing headaches for pilots on large ships entering and leaving the Port of Napier.

He says small craft are hard to see, and risk being run down.

Mr Rycroft says a close watch will be kept on kayakers and other boaties who enter the Port of Napier pilotage area. Offenders can be fined $200.
