Warning to keep away from polluted Clive river

10:01 pm on 22 January 2010

The Hawke's Bay Medical Officer of Health is warning people to keep away from the Clive river just south of Napier.

Dr Nicholas Jones says pollution from recent heavy rain has contaminated the river; water sampling this week showed high levels of bacteria.

People should avoid all recreational activities, Dr Jones says, adding that you can tell that a waterway is free of contamination if you can see your feet when kneedeep in water.
