Holiday camp closed by illness will reopen Tuesday

The Golden Bay Holiday Park is to remain closed until Tuesday, after the outbreak of a serious stomach bug at the property.

The owner of the popular South Island beachfront camping ground, Bob Perriam had hoped to re-open the park to new customers from Sunday night.

But he says he has been in discussions with the regional health board, and together they've decided it is safer to wait until at least another 24 hours before re-opening.

The Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health recommended the camp at Tukurua not take in new campers earlier this week after up to 50 new cases were identified.

Dr Ed Kiddle and his staff visited the camp on Friday and estimated that 60% - 70% of campers have been ill.

Dr Kiddle says the camping ground has worked hard to manage the outbreak.

He has issued a warning for holidaymakers elsewhere to be prepared in the event of anyone in their group showing the symptoms: vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach-aches.
