Low river levels prompt Kaitaia call to save water

12:01 pm on 25 January 2010

People in Kaitaia are being asked to conserve water as river levels drop there.

The Far North District Council says the Awanui River - the source of Kaitaia's public water supply - could fall below the level at which the council can legally use it.

In the case of a severe water shortage, Northland Regional Council can relax the rules and allow more water to be drawn.

But the district council says Kaitaia households and businesses can help now by saving water whenever possible and reporting any leaks.

There has been no significant rain in Northland for three months and the Government has declared a medium-level drought in the region.
