A man faces a raft of charges after a high-speed pursuit in Canterbury during which police say he pointed a pistol at officers.

Police say the man robbed the ANZ bank in Temuka at gunpoint on Wednesday morning.

He was pursued by police as he drove north on State Highway 1 in a stolen vehicle, reaching speeds of more than 140kmh.

Police say the man stopped the car in the middle of the road near Hinds and approached them pointing a pistol.

The man continued north and police called off the chase due to safety concerns.

He eventually lost control of his vehicle near Ashburton, crashing into a stationary car.

Police say a 21-year-old man will face various charges, while his passenger's involvement is also being investigated.
