A man faces a raft of charges after a high-speed pursuit in Canterbury during which police say he pointed a pistol at officers.
Police say the man robbed the ANZ bank in Temuka at gunpoint on Wednesday morning.
He was pursued by police as he drove north on State Highway 1 in a stolen vehicle, reaching speeds of more than 140kmh.
Police say the man stopped the car in the middle of the road near Hinds and approached them pointing a pistol.
The man continued north and police called off the chase due to safety concerns.
He eventually lost control of his vehicle near Ashburton, crashing into a stationary car.
Police say a 21-year-old man will face various charges, while his passenger's involvement is also being investigated.
