Group pushes for new Christchurch pool

Community groups in Christchurch say a new outdoor pool is needed in Edgeware to give local children a place where they can learn to swim.

The St Albans Pavilion and Pool group and the local swimming and lifesaving club have submitted a proposal to build a 25-metre pool at the site of the former Edgeware pool, which was demolished in 2006.

A spokesperson for the Pavilion and Pool group, Craig Dickson, says the project would cost about $2.5 million.

He says there are financial backers, providing the council agrees to sell the site.

Mr Dickson says the country's drowning statistics will only get worse as more community and school pools are closed.
