The Conservation Minister says she will look at any practical steps to reduce tensions on the West Coast during the whitebait season.

Kate Wilkinson was in Greymouth on Thursday for a meeting with about 60 whitebaiters, some of whom have called for stricter policing of rivers.

The West Coast Whitebaiters' Association has complained about poaching and threats and intimidation of fishers.

However, Ms Wilkinson says the Department of Conservation does not the resources to regularly monitor every river.

The whitebait season for the West Coast is 1 September to 14 November (inclusive).
