Designs for Whangarei bridge revealed

Three design options for the Whangarei's new harbour bridge have been released.

Whangarei District Council is building a $35 million bridge to relieve traffic congestion. It will receive a Government subsidy of $14 million.

The bridge will have a section that lifts to allow yachts to pass, the only such bridge in the country.

The council says it's looking for a signature bridge that will enhance the city and be an attraction in itself.

The three designs submitted by local architects have strong sculptural elements, including one based on the skeleton of a whale.

The council says the designs will go on display soon in Whangarei's civic centre.
