Eight trampers stranded in a Hawke's Bay back country hut by heavy rain have been rescued.

The party of three adults and five children walked into the Ruahine Forest Park inland from Waipukurau on Sunday before being cut off by rising rivers.

They spent the night at Waipawa Forks hut and were brought out by helicopter about 2pm on Monday.

Police say the group was never in serious danger, but were rescued to keep the children safe.
