The Gisborne District Council estimates it could cost up to $1 million to repair damage to roads and bridges due to heavy rain this week.

More than 300 millimetres of rain has fallen in some parts of the region since Sunday.

Council roading engineer Dennis Malone says most of the damage has occurred at Matawai and Whatatutu and inland from Tokomaru Bay.

Mr Malone believes there could be more than 20 bridges jammed up with large logs, some of which may be badly damaged.
