A man attacked by his own dogs at his Tauranga home has undergone more than five hours of surgery to repair wounds to his head and arms.

Police who responded on Friday to reports the man had been attacked found the 34-year-old almost unconscious because of blood loss.

The man managed to fight off the pit bull type dogs and shut them in a room of his Hairini house before calling emergency services, but had almost lost consciousness by the time help arrived.

The dogs were still agitated and were shot by police at the victim's house.

A Waikato Hospital spokesperson says the 34-year-old is in a serious condition.

Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross said police have not been able to speak to the man to determine why the dogs attacked him.
