Sewage leak again closes Wellington beach

8:52 am on 6 February 2010

For the second time in a fortnight, Wellington's Owhiro Bay beach is off limits because of potential sewage contamination.

Signs were put up on Friday alerting beach users to the danger, after traces of the bacteria enterococci were found, indicating microbiological pollution.

The city council is urging the public to steer clear of the water to avoid health problems like diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting.

The council's infrastructure director, Stavros Michael, says staff are conducting dye tests and using cameras to check the stormwater system in the suburb of Brooklyn, where it's suspected a pipe may be leaking.
