Hutt hills scrub fire put out

8:27 pm on 8 February 2010

A fire that flared up in the Hutt hills near Wellington on Sunday was put out on Monday, though the fire service said it couldn't rule out hotspots reigniting.

The principal rural fire officer for Hutt City, Paul Nickalls, says the fire destroyed 6.9 hectares of bush near a car dismantler's yard on the Eastern Hutt Road on Sunday.

He says fire officers returned to the scene on Monday morning to put out hotspots that had reignited.

Mr Nickalls says several fire appliances, a helicopter and about 22 fire officers worked to control the blaze, which was very difficult to extinguish because of wind gusts.
