Glacier-face rockfall lands tourist in hospital

9:16 pm on 8 February 2010

A tourist was airlifted to the Grey Base Hospital on Monday after being caught in a rockfall near the Franz Josef glacier face.

The police say the accident happened after two tourists ignored the safety warnings and left the designated path to get closer to the ice.

The tourist's condition is not life-threatening.

Just over a year ago two Australian brothers were killed when 100 tonnes of ice and rock fell on them as they posed for photos at the glacier face.
