Police have charged a passenger they claim encouraged a driver to behave recklessly during a pursuit through the Waikato.
They say a car was seen doing 'donuts' in Hamilton just after midnight, and when a police patrol went after it, the vehicle headed off at excessive speed in heavy rain.
The driver eventually pulled over and now faces several charges in relation to boy racer legislation, reckless driving and failing to stop.
Police say he later told officers he was from Auckland and had to rely on his passenger's local knowledge and navigation skills.
He also said his passenger encouraged him to speed up to get away.
Police say they have taken the unusual step of charging the passenger with aiding reckless driving.
