Wellington City Council is to consider a reduction in gaming machines in some suburbs.
Suburbs marked as "vulnerable" include, Tawa, Johnsonville, Miramar, Karori and Newtown.
Under a 2004 policy, the ratio of gaming machines in any electoral ward, except in the central city, was not allowed to exceed one machine to 250 people.
The council is to consider reducing that to one machine per 300.
However, Councillor Iona Pannett says that does not go far enough and the ratio should be one machine to 350 people.
Restrictions will be considered at a meeting of the strategy and policy committee on Thursday before public consultation is held.
Between 2005 and 2009 in Wellington almost $38.5 million went to community and sports groups through gaming machine proceeds.
