Polluted beach reopens

3:18 pm on 11 February 2010

An alert about sewage contamination at Owhiro Bay beach has been lifted.

Wellington City Council closed the beach last Friday after finding high levels of the bacteria enterococci, which indicates microbiological pollution.

It was the second time the beach had been closed in a fortnight.

The latest pollution has been traced to a blockage in a private sewer, but leak detection work will continue along Owhiro Bay Parade.

The council says water quality levels at Owhiro Bay Beach are now back to normal.
