Rail network in captial breaks down again

11:04 pm on 16 February 2010

The Wellington rail network has broken down for the third time this week.

Trains at Wellington Railway Station ground to a halt after an electrical fault in overhead wiring, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded from about 6pm on Tuesday.

Passengers were visibly angry, with one saying the situation was what he expected from a Third World country.

KiwiRail brought in shuttle buses to run between Wellington and Petone, and Wellington and Johnsonville.

KiwiRail says engineers were working on the fault on Tuesday night and lines have been shut down for work that was already scheduled.

On Monday morning, 2000 passengers had to get off their trains and switch to buses after electrical problems halted 10 trains.

There were more problems for commuters on Monday evening, with delays on the Hutt Valley and Paraparaumu lines.
