Mayor puzzled by legal threat over cancelled concert

New Plymouth Mayor Peter Tennent can't see any grounds for legal action against his council over a cancelled Whitney Houston concert.

Houston was due to perform in the city on 6 March, but promoter Andrew McManus on Tuesday cancelled the event citing a dispute with the venue's owner.

New Plymouth District Council owns the Bowl of Brooklands venue and Mr McManus has been reported as saying his lawyers are preparing legal action against the council.

Mr Tennent says the contract for the concert has not been signed and he does not know how the council could be sued.

He says the council has had no direct contact with Mr McManus, who advised the cancellation via a news release and told media, but not the council about the legal action.
