Fire services are battling several fires in the Waipoua Forest, north of Dargaville, on Thursday night.

The Northland forest is home to Tane Manhuta, New Zealand's largest living kauri.

The Fire Service says crews of up to seven appliances are battling blazes in 20 hectares of very dry forest.

Shift manager Megan Ruru says she does not know what part of the forest is affected or if the giant kauri, which stands 51 metres high, is in danger.
