An off-duty police officer is in an Auckland hospital after being attacked while trying to break up a fight.
The officer approached a group of people in the town of Tuakau after two members started fighting on Elizabeth Street about 4pm on Friday.
Police say the officer was hit from behind and kicked in the head and body as he and a member of the public tried to break up the fight.
A spokesperperson for Counties-Manukau police, Ana-Mari Gates-Bowey, says the officer was taken to his nearby home where he fell unconscious.
He was admitted to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland where he has regained consciousness and is responding to emergency department staff.
His condition was not known on Friday night.
Police are speaking with witnesses but no arrests have been made.
