Telecom's XT network failure; CAA says it has some airline pilots under surveillance for alcohol or drug abuse; portrait of Clayton Weatherston entered in Adam Portraiture Award.

Customers who want to get out of XT network contracts may have grounds to do so. Sue Chetwin of Consumer New Zealand says those who fell victim to the network's third or fourth failure, could probably argue that the service isn't fit for purpose if they wanted to break their contract.

Top Gear's Richard Hammond, who starred in XT's TV commercials, is reported as saying the launch was all good fun but he hadn't personally tested the service.

The Civil Aviation Authority says it has some airline pilots under surveillance for alcohol or drug abuse, but can't say how many, or whether they're still flying.

The company behind Telecom's XT network is flying in experts from around the world in a bid to fix the failing system. The Government has branded the network's problems as terribly embarrassing and asked for an urgent report on the fault.

An emergency call made made by a witness to an attack on a Japanese man on Monday was blocked because Telecom's XT network was down. Telecom chief executive Paul Reynolds said the network allows XT phones to switch to other networks when there is no coverage. However, when there were partial services the switch mechanism didn't work.

A 15-year-old Christchurch schoolboy is believed to have drowned after he was swimming with his family in the Waimakariri River on Tuesday night and got into trouble.
