Veteran rower's body recovered from lake

Alexander John Smolenski, 70, had been training in his one-man skiff on Lake Dunstan, near Cromwell, on Saturday morning.

His body was found on Sunday afternoon after a search involving the coast guard, the Fire Service, a helicopter, the police dive squad and rowing club members.

The president of the Dunstan Arm Rowing Club, Gerard Mulvey, says Mr Smolenski, who had been rowing since he the age of 10, was a stalwart of the club and would be deeply missed.

Mr Smolenski was a life member of the club and was considered to be fit and healthy.
