Home support for elderly to continue for longer

The Otago and Southland District Health Boards are slowing down moves to reduce home-based support for elderly people.

The boards announced last month they would try to save up to $4 million annually by restricting the availability of house cleaning, to avert a growing financial burden.

The chief executive of the boards, Brian Rousseau, says a review will continue at a slower pace, to ensure the process is safe and people who really need the service continue to get it.

He says that will also give companies doing the cleaning more time to adjust.
