Outbreak of diarrhoea-causing parasite in Christchurch

An outbreak of a diarrhoea-causing parasite in Christchurch is prompting the local district health board to warn anyone affected not to use swimming pools.

This year, 57 cases of cryptosporidium have been confirmed in the city.

Canterbury District Health Board is investigating the outbreak and says contaminated water or farm animals could be the source.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Ramon Pink says it's essential for anyone who has, or has had, diarrhoea to stay out of pools for at least two weeks after symptoms have settled to avoid further spread.
