Cave concert gets nod despite objections

A dub and reggae concert in a cave at Dunedin's Long Beach has been granted resource consent by Dunedin City Council despite concerns from some locals.

The Cave Sessions 2010 concert has been approved by the council with 34 conditions.

The event will attract up to a 1000 people to Long Beach, a settlement with about 100 houses, only half of which are permanently occupied.

Long Beach residents called a public meeting earlier this month to voice their concern about the plans to organisers and council planners. They say the site isn't an appropriate concert venue and

the event will disrupt and damage their small settlement.

But the council has determined that any negative effects can be sufficiently mitigated, and the event will go ahead next Friday.
