Moon sculpture taken down for good

A $27,000 public artwork in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes has been permanently removed after pieces of it kept falling off.

The sculpture, titled The Cycles of Marama, consists of five moons in various stages of the lunar cycle and was installed in 2004.

But on two separate occasions, one of the moons, which was suspended from a cable, fell off.

The moon was damaged, and the entire sculpture has now been taken down.

Auckland City Council's arts, culture and recreation committee has decided not repair or reinstall the sculpture because it will cost too much.

It says it was also concerned that someone could get hurt if one of the moons fell off again.
