Police investigating a serious assault on a young couple say they have not been able to find out what happened as the victims are suffering from memory loss.

The couple were found with what police describe as horrific injuries in the west Auckland suburb of Swanson earlier in March.

Residents found the man, 19, in Starling Park park. His partner, 17, was found on the doorstep of a nearby house a short time later.

Police say they have been talking to the couple, but both are suffering from extensive head injuries and cannot remember details about the attack.
