Speedway hamstrung by noise curb, supporters say

Supporters of Auckland's Western Springs speedway are concerned they could lose the facility if the city council doesn't ease noise restrictions.

The speedway agreed in 2006 to restrict the number of races and reduce noise levels. As a result, supporters say, it can't operate properly.

Now a regional council report is suggesting the speedway be relocated.

Speedway supporter Warwick McKenzie has started an online petition to keep the speedway at Western Springs and lift the noise restrictions.

Mr McKenzie, who says he's been getting signatures at a rate of four a minute, says it would be a tragedy for the sport if the 80-year-old speedway was to close.
