Town Hall organ given $3.5m lease of life

The Auckland Town Hall organ will be unveiled on Sunday after a $3.5 million restoration.

The organ, gifted to the city in 1911 by former mayor Sir Henry Brett, was shipped to Germany to be rebuilt two years ago.

The Auckland City Council says alterations to the organ in the 1970s damaged its appearance and sound.

The council says it contributed $3 million to the project, while the Town Hall Organ Trust raised $500,000.
