Accused of attacking cab-driver, denied bail

A 20-year-old Tauranga man accused of beating and robbing a taxi driver has been denied bail.

On Monday, Judge Peter Rollo made an interim order suppressing details of the bail hearing at the Tauranga District Court, other than the decision to refuse bail.

Stacey Adam was remanded in custody for a week after police opposed the bail application made by a duty solicitor.

The 55-year-old taxi driver has been receiving treatment in Tauranga Hospital for facial and head injuries.

The police have described the incident early on Sunday morning as a serious assault. It's alleged cash and personal belongings were also stolen from the cab, which had taken passengers from central Tauranga to Darraghs Rd at about 3am.

The 20-year-old man was arrested at a nearby address.
