A Canterbury company has been fined $85,000 in the Ashburton District Court after one of its workers was crushed to death in machinery.
Alexander Cooper, 24, was killed in the RX Plastics factory in Tinwald, near Ashburton, in March last year.
He was leaning into a machine to remove a faulty pipe fitting when his head and upper torso were crushed due to a safety mechanism being overridden.
RX Plastics has already made payments totalling nearly $218,000 to the victim's family.
The Department of Labour says its investigations revealed that safety mechanisms had also been overridden on other items of machinery.
