Wellington is a step closer to getting a total city-wide ban on drinking liquor in public.
At a Wellington City Council meeting on Wednesday councillors voted to take the question of extending the liquor ban to the public.
Councillor Ngaire Best says the freedom of having a drink will have to be balanced against the freedom of using public places.
There is now a liquour ban in place covering Lambton Quay, Courtney Place, Oriental Bay, Aro Valley and the Mt Victoria lookout.
Submissions on a complete ban open on Tuesday and close on 5 May.
