The Manawatu Gorge was again on Thursday morning to retrieve the wreckage of a truck and trailer.
The truck ploughed through a barrier early on Wednesday morning, killing driver John Douglas Watene, 49, of Palmerston North died.
The road through the gorge was closed for much of the day so emergency services could clear the scene.
Police closed the road again at 9am on Thursday to recover the trailer unit from the river. Diversions will be in place via either the Saddle Road or Pahiatua Track.
