Mount Allan hotspots still smouldering

Firefighters hope to completely extinguish the Mount Allan fire near Dunedin in the next few days, more than a month after it began.

The blaze razed 800 hectares of forest owned by Wenita Forest Products, and took weeks to bring under control.

Dunedin's principal rural fire officer, Graeme Still, says he located six hotspots on Wednesday morning using infra-red equipment.

A dozen firefighters were sent to douse them.

Mr Still hopes to declare the firefighting effort over by the end of the week.
