The bomb squad was called to a property near Rotorua on Friday night after a suspicious package was found attached to a fence.
Officers from the Defence Force's Explosive Ordinance Disposal Squad inspected and dismantled the package.
State Highway 30 was blocked until the bomb squad gave the all-clear.
Police say the package's suspicious appearance was genuine and they are investigating why it was put there.
It contained no flammable or explosive components.
