One person has been killed and another is critically injured after a car accident near Ashburton.
The ambulance service says it was called to the single vehicle crash on State Highway 1 in Fairton about 1am on Sunday.
One person was found dead. The other, a man in his 40s, had to be cut out of the car by a fire crew.
The injured man was taken by ambulance to Ashburton Hospital, then transferred to Christchurch Hospital where he is receiving treatment for multiple, serious, injuries.
