A liquor ban has resulted in fewer arrests than usual at a popular Coromandel festival, police say.

During the weekend, 230 people were arrested at Whangamata's tenth annual Beach Hop, 60 fewer than last year.

Police say arrest numbers at the event have continually reduced following the ban, which was introduced a few years ago.

They say about 100 staff were brought in for the event, during which the town's population swells from about 3000 to 60,000.
