Pacific Island leaders in the Auckland suburb of Tamaki are unhappy plans for urban renewal in the area have not involved the community.
Pacifica Tamaki Branch chairperson Josephine Bartley says the Tamaki Transformation Programme's good intentions for improving housing, health and social well-being will be wasted if the community is excluded from planning.
Ms Bartley fears the project will have difficulty meeting its goals unless changes are made.
The leader of St Pius X Pacific Group, Koreti Kololo, says the programme's focus appears to be directed at keeping government departments happy.
But the manager of the programme, Jenny Oxley, says her team works hard to engage with people, despite difficulties with communication.
