Taxi head pleads for camera law, after attack

10:44 pm on 30 March 2010

The head of an Auckland taxi company says new safety measures in taxis cannot come soon enough, after one of her drivers was robbed at knifepoint.

Two men threatened to kill a Cheap Cab taxi driver, stealing his car and a small amount of money, in New Lynn on Saturday.

The car was found but not the men.

The manager of Cheap Cab, who did not want to be named, says she would like to see cameras introduced.

She says she does not know why the government is taking so long to make them compulsory.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce has commissioned a report into new safety measures, the results of which he will discuss with industry representatives on Tuesday.
