An internal investigation by the trust board of the Hoani Waititi Marae in West Auckland has led to the police arresting a 47-year-old woman over allegations of fraud and theft.
Police say she was arrested after a complaint a substantial amount of money was taken from the marae trust accounts over a four-year period.
She faces four charges, including using a document for pecuniary advantage and causing a loss by deception.
In a written statement, Hoani Waiti Marae board chair Waiora Arama says members were made aware late last year of the anomalies.
He says the board hired a forensic accountant to investigate and the results have been handed police.
Mr Arama says it was in the interest of the public to go to police.
A police spokesperson says the woman was due to appear in Waitakere District Court on Tuesday.
