Tauranga taxi driver robbed

6:28 pm on 3 April 2010

A woman taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint in Tauranga on Thursday night, the third robbery of a driver in the city in about a month, police say.

The driver picked up a passenger in Mount Maunganui, and was robbed at about 11pm near the Tauranga Historic Village.

Police say a man fled on foot but was tracked by a dog and handler, suffering a dog bite that put him in hospital.

Sergeant Steve Hindmarsh says the series of robberies appears to reflect what's happening with taxi drivers around the country.

He says security cameras cannot be brought in soon enough.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce will ask Cabinet in the next month to support making cameras compulsory by about September next year.

A 19-year-old Mount Maunganui man has been charged with aggravated robbery and was to appear in court on Saturday.
