Giant chess pieces stolen from Cathedral Square in Christchurch have been returned, while another piece taken six years ago has also surfaced.
The five pieces disappeared after the set was accidentally left out overnight on Wednesday.
Christchurch City Council appealed for their return, saying no questions would be asked.
The council's marketing manager, Richard Stokes, says the people who took the pieces were pressured by friends into returning them in good condition at midday on Thursday.
Mr Stokes says the large public response to the appeal was fantastic.
Meanwhile, West Coast police have been contacted by someone who knew the location of a knight that went missing six years ago. Its transport to Christchurch is being organised.
