Police in Hamilton have confirmed that a body found in the Waikato River is that of a missing elderly woman.
Audrey Gibson, 82, was last seen at her home in the suburb of Chartwell on 2 December.
Her remains were found in the river, near Meremere, on Saturday.
Police say there is nothing to suggest that Mrs Gibson suffered any injury, or that there was any foul play.
However, Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton says police are unlikely to ever know how the body came to be in the river and the cause of death will be difficult to establish.
Mrs Gibson's large extended family spent many weeks combing Hamilton searching for her.
They say they are grateful to finally have her home so they can lay her to rest and begin the grieving process.
